Nigeria and the Republic of Niger have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening regional energy cooperation following a high-level bilateral meeting between Nigeria's Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Ph.D., and the Minister of Petroleum of the Republic of Niger, His Excellency Mr. Hamadou Tini, on the sidelines of the 25th Nigeria Oil and Gas (NOG) Energy Week Conference and Exhibition 2026, held from 5–9 July 2026 at the Abuja International Conference Centre, Abuja.

The meeting formed part of a series of strategic engagements taking place during Africa's foremost oil, gas and energy conference, which has brought together government officials, policymakers, international energy companies, investors, regulators, development partners and industry experts to deliberate on the future of Africa's energy sector.

During the bilateral discussions, both ministers explored opportunities for sustainable collaboration aimed at enhancing regional energy integration, strengthening energy security, promoting cross-border investments and unlocking the enormous hydrocarbon potential across West Africa.

Senator Lokpobiri emphasized that Africa's energy future depends on stronger partnerships among neighbouring countries, coordinated policy implementation, technology transfer and the sharing of technical expertise. He noted that closer cooperation between Nigeria and the Republic of Niger would contribute significantly to expanding energy access, increasing petroleum production, improving infrastructure development and supporting economic growth across the region.

The Minister further stressed the need for African nations to adopt innovative approaches that encourage investment, improve operational efficiency and create an enabling environment for sustainable development throughout the continent's energy value chain.

"Our discussions underscored the importance of strengthening regional partnerships, fostering knowledge exchange and advancing policies that unlock Africa's vast energy resources. Through deeper collaboration and a shared commitment to innovation, African countries can accelerate energy development, enhance energy security and deliver lasting prosperity for our people," Senator Lokpobiri stated following the meeting.

The bilateral engagement aligns with Nigeria's ongoing petroleum sector reforms under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, which continue to improve the country's investment climate while promoting greater regional cooperation within Africa's energy industry.

This year's NOG Energy Week, marking its 25th anniversary, is held under the theme "Accelerating Global Energy Progress Through Investment, Partnerships and Innovation." Since its inception in 2001, the conference has evolved into one of Africa's largest and most influential platforms for dialogue on oil, gas, energy transition, local content development, investment promotion and technological advancement.

HYPENEWS REPORTS confirm that the 2026 edition has featured ministerial sessions, strategic panel discussions, technical conferences, exhibitions and bilateral meetings involving senior government officials and industry leaders from across Africa and beyond, reinforcing the continent's commitment to energy security, sustainable resource development and regional economic integration.

The meeting between Nigeria and the Republic of Niger further demonstrates the growing recognition that collaborative regional partnerships remain essential to addressing Africa's energy challenges, maximizing shared resources and building a resilient, secure and prosperous energy future for the continent.
