In a landmark move aimed at transforming the energy landscape of Benue State, Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia has officially signed the Benue State Electricity Bill into law, marking a significant milestone in the state's drive toward improved power supply, economic growth, and sustainable development.

The signing of the legislation follows the ongoing implementation of the Electricity Act, which empowers sub-national governments to establish and regulate electricity markets within their jurisdictions. The new law provides the legal framework for Benue State to independently develop, generate, transmit, distribute, and regulate electricity services, thereby expanding access to reliable and affordable power for residents and businesses.

Speaking during the signing ceremony at the Government House in Makurdi, Governor Alia described the legislation as a strategic intervention designed to unlock the state's economic potential, attract investors, and create opportunities for industrial growth.

According to the Governor, access to stable electricity remains a critical driver of development, productivity, and job creation. He emphasized that the new law would enable the state to partner with private sector investors and development agencies to accelerate the provision of modern energy infrastructure across urban and rural communities.

Governor Alia noted that the enactment of the Electricity Law aligns with his administration's commitment to improving the living standards of citizens through infrastructural development, economic diversification, and investment-friendly policies.

"The signing of this bill into law represents a new era for Benue State. It provides a foundation for increased investment in the power sector, supports industrialization, strengthens small and medium-scale enterprises, and enhances the overall quality of life of our people through improved electricity access," the Governor stated.

The law is expected to facilitate the establishment of an effective regulatory framework that will encourage competition, efficiency, and innovation in electricity generation and distribution within the state. It also opens opportunities for renewable energy projects, mini-grid development, and rural electrification initiatives aimed at connecting underserved communities to reliable power.

Hypenews Reports gathered that Industry stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as a bold and progressive step that positions Benue State among the leading sub-national governments embracing energy sector reforms to drive economic advancement.

Analysts believe that improved electricity supply will significantly reduce the cost of doing business, stimulate agricultural processing, support manufacturing activities, enhance healthcare and educational services, and strengthen the state's overall economic competitiveness.

The signing of the Benue State Electricity Law underscores Governor Alia's vision of building a prosperous and economically vibrant state through strategic reforms and infrastructure development. It further demonstrates the administration's resolve to create an enabling environment for investment while delivering tangible benefits to the people of Benue State.

As implementation begins, residents and investors alike are optimistic that the new legal framework will usher in a future of reliable power supply, increased economic opportunities, and sustainable development across the state.
