The School of Politics, Policy, and Governance (SPPG), in partnership with the Yar’Adua Foundation and the MacArthur Foundation, convened the Big Ideas Platform 2024 on May 25, 2024 held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre.



With the theme “Information Technology and Behavior Change,” exploring technology and social innovation as game-changers for Africa’s development.





The  CEO  School of Politics Policy and Governcce, Mrs Alero Ayida-Otobo,  in her speech,  said that technology is truly a game changer, playing a pivotal role in tackling Africa’s challenges across sectors like communication, commerce, education, and more.



The platform delved into four key subthemes: blockchain technology, environmental awareness, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence (AI). Four prominent African innovators presented their “big ideas” for leveraging these technologies for positive impact.




The Big Ideas Platform 2024 serves as a valuable platform in knowledge sharing and exploration of the transformative potential of technological advancement.



The  innovations presented, offered significant development for addressing Africa’s pressing issues and driving positive change across sectors in education, communication, medicine, others.



While speaking with Newsmen,   Mrs. Alero,  highlighted how Nigeria change maker, pioneering Big Technological solutions to foster development in Africa. 




SPPG, has produced leaders
who not only possess the right values but also have the knowledge and skills required to solve complex public problems.




Also nothing, a milestone was achieved where 55 members of the alumni were aspirants for elective offices in various
parties of which 9 won their party tickets and ran as candidates in the recent 2023 elections she said.

Further more,  she said  SPPG has target  to train a minimum of 5000 such transcendental leaders over 5 years in Nigeria and other African countries on our empirically designed curriculum of 140 multidisciplinary topics delivered in 10 months by 94 renowned academics, practitioners, and experts from around the
world.




She  was delighted to announce the Introduction of #TheSPPGAdvantage campaign.
The rationale of the campaign is founded on the understanding that the challenges of Nigeria’s political and governance space demand more than just passion and desire for change. With the
SPPG Advantage, we're offering a comprehensive approach to empowering leaders to drive positive change in Nigeria she stressed 



The platform is to foster discussions on scaling these ideas for Africa’s transformation.



SPPG’s Blockchain Project lead, Oluseun Badejo, made a commitment to using of blockchain technology to address issues like certificate forgery and data alteration in the education sector.


“With this in place it's secured a cost-effective solution which will streamline verification of academic credentials, benefiting both institutions and graduates,” she said.




Prof. Remi Sonaiya, an educationalist,
stressed the importance of ethical considerations and responsible use of technology.




 Sian Cuffy Young, a management expert advocated for fostering environmental awareness in children through educational resources and animations.


“ As early education on practical waste management skills will cultivate a generation committed to environmental responsibility,” Young added.



Sabiqah Bello, who represented,  Ahmad Salkida of HumanAngle, a media platform utilising VR to humanise Africa’s conflicts, pointed the the power of VR journalism. VR  which allows viewers to experience the realities of others, fostering deeper empathy and understanding.




Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, a technology education expert, highlighted the crucial role of AI in information verification. She emphasised the need for AI literacy and integrating AI education into curricula to equip Africa’s future workforce with essential skills.

Who led the conversation, mentioned concerns raised by panellists like Ajibola Amzat, a Nigerian investigative journalist, who emphasised the potential for misuse of technology.



Frank Nweke Jnr, a politician, 
highlighted the need for Africa to be a player in the global AI conversation.



Founder of #FixPolitics, Dr. Obiageli ‘Oby’ Ezekwesili, has expressed her joy of the gain made and emphasis the critical role of behaviour change in driving Africa’s progress.


She  however, underscored SPPG’s commitment to ensuring these “big ideas” translate into tangible results across the continent.
