The Lagos State Government unveiled 15 locally fabricated high-capacity boats, the OMI-BUS, in collaboration with Caverton Marine, featuring advanced amenities including inbuilt USB charging points life buoys, lifejackets, fire extinguishers, and a stereo system, designed to accommodate 40 passengers each.

Governor Babajide Sanwoolu, commissioned the boats at the Badore Jetty, Eti-Osa Local Government Area, Lagos State on Wednesday, and monitored by Surprise Africa.

According to him, the new ferries have not only enhanced our waterways but also showcased our commitment to sustainable, efficient, and reliable transport options for all Lagosians.

He said, "The new boats will double the capacity of our existing vessels. This project marks the beginning of a new era in water transportation, offering a faster, cleaner, and more comfortable commute.

"The deployment of these ferries underscores our dedication to reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity between communities. By saving hours lost in traffic, we are boosting economic prosperity and enhancing the quality of life for our residents.

"This initiative aligns perfectly with our THEMES+ agenda, promoting pollution-free mobility and integrating an intermodal transportation system. The new ferries operate on the Cowry Card payment system, ensuring seamless and efficient service for all users," the Governor said.

Governor Sanwollu further emphasised that his administration is committed to unveiling of additional 25 high-capacity ferries, which according to him, will be fabricated in the second phase of the ferry scheme.

He stated that the initiatives will further expand the State's waterway routes and reduce turnaround times.

Sanwoolu said, "These ferries are equipped with cutting-edge technology to ensure safety, comfort, and convenience for all passengers.

"Our commitment to enhancing the Lagos transportation system is unwavering," he said.

The Governor emphasised that with the new patrol boats, a Search and Rescue Unit, and a floating clinic, Lagos State is committed to ensuring that the waterways are safe and efficient.

Surprise Africa gathered that the OMI-BUS are international standardized Vessels that meet Bureau Veritas' specific safety and reliability criteria.

According to Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Sanwoolu, the Boats are equipped with life buoys, lifejackets, fire extinguishers, and pyrotechnics to reduce the risk of casualties.

He said, "The OMI-BUS is equipped with more efficient Yamaha outboard engines that produce significantly fewer CO2 emissions, contributing to cleaner air and a reduced environmental footprint.

" The OMI-BUS ferries have extra features such as USB charging points, a stereo system for your entertainment, LED lighting for a pleasant ambiance, a non-slip deck mat for your safety, and a public address system for continuous updates,"
