Wike Cancels All Abuja International Conference Centre Event Bookings

Mr. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has taken a decisive step by canceling all event bookings at the Abuja International Conference Centre.

This action follows his recent inspection of the facility, where he expressed deep concerns about its state.

Wike emphasized the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the center, stating that the current condition does not meet international standards.

Describing the facility in its present state as a mere conference centre, Woke said,  “There is nothing international about the centre.

“When we came here for the ECOWAS inauguration sometime last week, with President Bola Tinubu, no right-thinking human being would see the state of this facility and be happy.

“In fact, during the inauguration, Tinubu drew my attention to the rot. Even the lighting system was so poor.

“This is unacceptable. There is no way we can accept this as an International Conference Centre.

“You cannot call it a conference centre but not international, because there is no standard compared to any international conference centre”.

The Minister's decision to suspend all events at the International Conference Centre is aimed at facilitating a complete rehabilitation of the facility.

Julius Berger has been tasked with the immediate renovation, with a timeline of eight months set for the project's completion.

Wike's vision is to transform the center into a world-class International Conference Centre that reflects Nigeria's commitment to excellence.

In response to the poor state of the facility, Wike terminated the contract of the company previously managing the center and entrusted Julius Berger with the renovation project.

Wike said, "So, we are sorry to announce this; every booking made here is cancelled.

“We will start immediate rehabilitation of the centre to meet up with international standards,” the FCT Minister said.

He highlighted the importance of upgrading the center to align with global standards, ensuring that it becomes a source of pride for Nigerians and the international community.

The Minister expressed determination  to enhance the country's infrastructure and reputation through a first class event center.

Wike aims to deliver a facility that not only meets international benchmarks but also serves as a symbol of Nigeria's progress and capability on the global stage.
